About the organisation
- The Woodland Trust is the UK's largest woodland conservation charity. Our vision is a world where woods and trees thrive for people and nature.
About the vacancy
- In this volunteering role, you'll be helping us detect threats in all areas of the UK by regularly monitoring the online planning register of your allocated Local Planning Authority for any planning applications that impact on ancient woodland or ancient and veteran trees. Full training will be provided in the form of background reading and a face-to-face training session. As part of your training, you will learn the basics of understanding planning applications, using various mapping systems and how to identify if an area of woodland is ancient or if it contains ancient and veteran trees.
Key Responsibilities
- • Supporting the Woodland Trust’s fight against further loss of ancient woodland and veteran trees
• Analysing the planning registers from week to week for new planning proposals and developments that may impact on ancient woods or veteran trees for your designated area
• Assessing written material accurately and in a consistent way, to provide the Woods Under Threat team with the evidence and detail necessary to support a case
• Liaising with your volunteer manager on a weekly basis via Assemble to update on progress
Attending at least one training session relevant to your volunteer role
• Operating within our Volunteer Charter, policies, procedures, and guidelines
• As part of your role, you will need to log all the hours you volunteer through Assemble, your volunteering website, either on the desktop version or the mobile app
• Work within the risk assessment provided by your volunteer manager
Key Competencies
- • A passion for preventing further loss of ancient woodland and veteran trees
• Ability to understand maps and planning documents or the willingness to learn
• Ability to carry out research, mainly through different websites and search engines
• Good attention to detail
• Familiarity with using Microsoft packages or similar
• Ability to work to deadlines
• An interest in the value woods and trees bring to the environments we live in and an affinity and commitment to the aims of the Woodland Trust
• Willingness to gain knowledge of legislation relevant to woodland and the current planning system
• A sensible regard for health and safety
Desired Qualifications
- No specific qualifications are required.
How to Apply
An interview and two references will be required for this role, and training will need to be completed before the role commences. Please ensure you have known referees for more than 6 months and they are not a partner, close relative, or Woodland Trust employee. Former or current work colleagues, friends, volunteers, and neighbours that have known you for more than 6 months are some examples that would be fine. Expenses will be reimbursed for return journeys from home based on public transport cost or mileage at standard rates for the Woodland Trust. As a volunteer you may have the opportunity to support the Trust at events in your area. We will contact you when these occasions arise to see if you are available and would like to help.
