About the organisation
- The Woodland Trust is the UK's largest woodland conservation charity. Our vision is a world where woods and trees thrive for people and nature.
About the vacancy
- As a Warden you will help us to ensure that our woods are well maintained, accessible and safe. By regularly walking routes through the wood and noting the condition of paths, signage and the woodland itself, you will highlight issues to the Woodland Trust Site Manager. We also receive valuable information on plants and wildlife in our woods from our volunteer Wardens – so noting what you see on your route will also be part of this role.
Key Responsibilities
- • Walk the site on a regular basis, noting things such as interesting wildlife, maintenance issues or site problems
• Reporting any damage, incidents or activities to the Woodland Trust Site Manager
• Carry out minor repairs at the Site Manager’s request, only where appropriate training is given, equipment is available, and safety procedures are adhered to
• Representing the Woodland Trust in an appropriate manner when on site, and inspiring others to support us by referring visitors to further information
• Operating within our Volunteer Charter, policies, procedures, and guidelines
• Pick up litter in a safe manner and report any flying to the authorities as appropriate.
• As part of your role, you will need to log all the hours you volunteer through Assemble, your volunteering website, either on the desktop version or the mobile app
Key Competencies
- • Familiarity with the woods being monitored
• Ability and availability to visit the wood throughout the year
• A reasonable degree of physical fitness
• Ability to communicate calmly and effectively with a wide range of visitors on site
• An understanding of the needs of the public and of native wildlife, and an interest in conservation and woodlands
• A sensible regard for health and safety
Desired Qualifications
- Disclaimer:
An interview and two references will be required for this role, and training will need to be completed before the role commences. Please ensure you have known referees for more than 6 months and they are not a partner, close relative, or Woodland Trust employee. Former or current work colleagues, friends, volunteers, and neighbours that have known you for more than 6 months are some examples that would be fine. Expenses will be reimbursed for return journeys from home based on public transport cost or mileage at standard rates for the Woodland Trust. As a volunteer you may have the opportunity to support the Trust at events in your area. We will contact you when these occasions arise to see if you are available and would like to help.
No specific qualifications are required.
