About the organisation

    The Woodland Trust is the UK's largest woodland conservation charity. Our vision is a world where woods and trees thrive for people and nature.

About the vacancy

    Our volunteer Working Groups help us to care for our woods and the wildlife within them. Working Group tasks are linked to the management plan for each wood and can include activities such as coppicing or thinning within the wood, removal of invasive plant species, keeping paths clear, or tree planting.

Key Responsibilities

    • Tasks will vary but may include: removal of rhododendron, removal of Himalayan balsam, maintenance of paths, fences, gates or other onsite furniture, coppicing of trees, thinning of woodland, planting of trees, or litter picking. This list is not exhaustive and is dependent on the requirements for each site

    • Carrying out set practical tasks following the guidance given by the Working Group Leader

    • Using tools and equipment to carry out tasks in accordance with our Health and Safety guidance and rules, and under the supervision of the Working Group Leader

    • Reporting any issues during the session to the Working Group Leader

    • Operating within our Volunteer Charter, policies, procedures, and guidelines

Key Competencies

    • An interest in conservation and woodlands

    • Outdoor working experience is useful, but not necessary – instructions will be given for each task

    • Ability to work within a group of people from a wide range of backgrounds

    • Reasonable level of fitness and stamina

    • Access to a phone, the internet, an email address and appropriate clothing, including sturdy footwear

    • A sensible regard for health and safety

    Disclaimer:
    Expenses will be reimbursed for return journeys from home based on public transport cost or mileage at standard rates for the Woodland Trust. As a volunteer, you may have the opportunity to support the Trust at events in your area. We will contact you when these occasions arise to see if you are available and would like to help.
